Implementation Plan

A proper implementation plan is crucial. The following are topics that should at least be addressed (non exhaustive): Introductory text and Glossary System overview / Architecture overview and where this is changed System description and reference to business requirements Assumptions and Constraints System Organisation Management overview / Executive Summary Description of the implementation Stakeholders involved Tasks of the implementation Schedule System Security Features Security system setup during implementation Implementation support Hardware and software facilities, materials Impact for the business, processes and organization Risks and Contingencies Implementation Verification / validation (e.g. quality procedures, testing, surveys) Acceptance criteria

Implementation Methods

An implementation can be done in many ways, there’s no real right or wrong. However, the implementation needs to start with an implementation assessment. basically stating “Are we ready for this?”, actually formulating an overall capability plan. Steps to carry out could be; Implementation Assessment, you can incorporate the enterprise business vision in this assessment, what resources should be involved an committed to this? How do we determine the degree of involvement for business resources in their daily jobs vs. project involvement; Determine the entire vision, where do we want to be in ..?; Create an implementation plan.

Determine Implementation Degree and prerequisites

Any implementation degree can be determined by using the IMM best practice. Fontein ICT has articulated experience in determining the implementation degree.

Pre-requisites for a successful implementation:

  • Guard the scope, preferable no changes to the plan
  • Clear organization structure
  • Involve the internal client (your employees)
  • Communicate ! (failure and success)
  • The business leads
  • In case of external vendors, they need to have a strong counterpart in your organization

Implementation Failure

Implementations can fail e.g. due to the following reasons, please click read more to find out why.

  • Incompetent Management
  • Vague strategic vision
  • Inadequate articulated and detailed vision
  • No centralized implementation plan
  • Inadequate planning and control
  • Adverse political interests
  • Culture of fear

Some statistics:

  • Approx. 10% is successful
  • Implementation Cost is Approx. twice of original estimation
  • Implementation Plan dates are Approx. 2,5 times > than original planning
  • Approx. 45% of the desired functionality is delivered
  • Approx. 40% of projects are terminated

Implementation Assessment

To assess the status and/or implementation degree of a specific implementation a view best of breed methods can be applied like the IMM (Implementation Maturity Method)
Using this method via the following dimensions:

  • Process
  • Control
  • HR
  • Means
  • Information

For each of the aforementioned areas one can determine the level;

  • Initial (lowest level, organisation is not stable
  • Repeatable
  • Defined
  • Managed
  • Optimizing
